The centre is a research unit that studies marine ecosystems alongside coastal and maritime engineering under one roof, operating within Yıldız Technical University.
How we work
Three principles shape how we work.
We do not talk about what we have not measured. Behind every finding is a dataset we collected ourselves or whose source we state plainly; the method and the uncertainty ranges are published with the finding.
We do not put data behind a paywall. Raw measurement series, calibration records and null results go into open access too. The number a decision rests on has to be auditable.
We work with the place the finding will be applied. Municipalities, port operators and ministry units are co-investigators on projects; we do not hand over a report and withdraw.
Within the university
The centre operates within Yıldız Technical University. The university traces its origin to the Kondüktör Mekteb-i Âlisi, founded on 31 July 1911; it became the İstanbul State Academy of Engineering and Architecture in 1969, Yıldız University in 1983, and took its present name under Law 3837 of 3 July 1992.

- 1911 Kondüktör Mekteb-i Âlisi founded (31 July).
- 1923 Reorganised as Nafıa Fen Mektebi.
- 1937 Moved to the Yıldız Palace complex.
- 1969 Became the İstanbul State Academy of Engineering and Architecture (3 June, Law 1184).
- 1983 Yıldız University established (30 March, Law 2809).
- 1992 Took the name Yıldız Technical University (3 July, Law 3837).
