Marine Measurement Laboratory

Water sample analysis, sensor calibration and data processing.

The Marine Measurement Laboratory is where water, sediment and biological samples from field campaigns are processed. Three workflows are kept separate: nutrient and oxygen analysis, microplastic separation and polymer identification, and sensor calibration.

The microplastic line works under clean-room conditions. After density separation and organic matter removal, particles are counted under a stereo microscope and polymer type is identified by FTIR. Airborne contamination is the known weak point of this analysis; the laboratory runs a blank with every batch and reports the contamination level.

The sensor calibration corner lets CTD and oxygen probes due to go on a cruise be verified against reference solutions. Calibration records are published together with the datasets: how reliable a measurement is matters as much as the measurement itself.

The laboratory is also used for graduate teaching and provides analysis services to external institutions.
